Joinery — Bookcases
Around a door, in an alcove, beneath a sloping ceiling: a bespoke bookcase follows the room. I design it for what it must carry, because a shelf of books weighs more than one might think.

What I take into account.
A bookcase framing a door or window, with returns scribed to the wall.
Shelf thickness and length calculated so they do not bow under the weight of books.
Fixings suited to the wall: plaster, brick, partition. A bookcase must hold without moving.
Low cupboards, niches for a screen or a sound system, cable routes planned in.
Integrated, wired-in shelf lighting, with no visible cables.
Mouldings, skirting and the junction with the ceiling reworked, so the piece looks as though it has always been there.
From the workshop's other trades
A metre of books is heavy. A shelf that is too thin bows within months; a fixing placed at random ends up tearing out the plaster. I size before I make.
The Left Bank and the 16th for everyday work, neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Measuring and fitting take two visits, not ten.
