Electrical — Lighting

Hang a new light, or bring a cherished one back to life.

A heavy pendant, an antique chandelier, a wall light with no box, a bedside lamp with a fraying flex: fitting and repair both depend first on what lies behind — a hook, a box, or nothing at all.

Fitting

Pendants, wall lights, ceiling lights, track

Repair

Rewiring, lampholders, cord switches

What I do.

Five requests, from a simple fitting to a full restoration.

Hanging a pendant

The question is not the wiring, it is the fixing: a ten-kilo chandelier will not hold on a standard ceiling connector. I fix into the real structure, not into the plaster.

A wall light with no supply point

The supply has to be brought to the wall. Depending on the room, it runs through an existing conduit, a moulding, or a chased and made-good channel — decided before work begins.

Rewiring an antique light

A chandelier found at a dealer's often still has its original wiring, which no longer insulates. I rewire it completely, replace the lampholders, and connect the earth when the frame is metal.

Floor and bedside lamps

A bare flex, a broken cord switch, a lampholder that no longer grips the bulb: all can be repaired, and with a fine lamp that is always better than replacing it.

Track and cable lighting

To light several areas from a single supply point. Useful in a long living room, or a room with no central ceiling light.

The ceiling decides, not the light.

In Parisian buildings a ceiling is seldom what it seems: lath and plaster, a suspended ceiling, a hidden beam, or a thirty-centimetre void. I probe before drilling and choose the fixing according to what I find. That is the difference between a pendant that holds for twenty years and one that comes down one evening.

Where I work.

Five arrondissements — the Left Bank, and the 16th just across the river — covered neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Each arrondissement has its own page, as does each neighbourhood.

Paris 7th Champ-de-Mars · La Tour-Maubourg · Saint-François-Xavier · Rue du Bac · Saint-Germain · Solférino · Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin · Invalides · Ecole Militaire · Gros Caillou
