Electrical — Switches and sockets

A socket that runs hot is not repaired. It is replaced.

A socket that is cracked, scorched, no longer grips the plug, or has no earth: the replacement itself is simple. What matters is checking what feeds it, rather than fitting a new socket over an old fault.

Time

20 to 40 minutes per socket

Standard

Every socket must be earthed

What I do.

Four situations, and what each one really involves.

A loose or cracked socket

The plug no longer holds, or the casing has broken. The mechanism is replaced and the terminals properly tightened — that is where overheating begins.

A socket without earth

Common in homes built before 1970. If an earth conductor already runs in the conduit, it is connected; if not, one must be run from the consumer unit. I can tell you which as soon as the socket is open.

A scorched or warm socket

This is not a cosmetic flaw: it is a terminal heating up, which means a poor contact, which means a risk. The socket is replaced and the circuit checked upstream, consumer unit included.

Matching a whole set

Replacing all the fittings in an apartment at once costs less than doing them one by one, and lets any faults be found in a single visit.

Earthing is not optional.

An unearthed socket in a bedroom is an irregularity; in a kitchen or bathroom, it is a genuine danger. When I find sockets that are not earthed, I tell you how many remain, what putting them right costs, and where to begin if you would rather not do everything at once.
