Electrical — Appliances

Connect the new appliance to what is already there.

The appliance has been delivered and the supply is in place: what remains is to connect it properly, make sure it does not trip the breaker, and ensure it can one day be disconnected without taking the kitchen apart.

One to two hours, depending on the appliance

What I do.

What I check every time I connect an appliance.

The connection itself

A connection box for a hob, a 16 or 20 A socket for the rest. Terminals tightened to the correct torque, conductors the right way round, earth connected — this is where later overheating is decided.

Compatibility with the circuit

Before connecting, I look at what the line already supplies and what protection it carries. A new appliance on an old, overloaded circuit is a trip waiting to happen.

Single phase, three phase, and links to move

Many hobs are wired differently depending on whether the supply is single or three-phase: links must be fitted or removed in the terminal block. Done wrong, the hob half works, or burns out.

Access for later

A socket within reach, an appliance that comes out of its cabinet without breaking anything. I plan for it at the time of connection, because no one thinks of it until something fails.

The test under load

I run the appliance and measure what it actually draws. Five minutes show whether the circuit holds — better then than at the first family dinner.

Connection or installation?

If a dedicated line already exists and is correctly sized, it is a connection: quick, and charged accordingly. If a new way has to be created at the consumer unit and the cable run, it is an installation. Send me a photo of the consumer unit and of the location, and I will tell you which before I come.
