The buildings
Haussmann-era or older working-class blocks, the local buildings always raise the same questions: cloth-covered wiring still in place behind the skirting boards, no earth in the wet rooms, rising mains too small for what we plug in today.
Knowing this changes the quote: I know what I will find before opening anything up, and where to run cables without damaging a cornice.
Cloth-covered wiring — Locating · Replacing · New conduits
No earth — Equipotential bonding · RCD protection
Rising main — Cable size check · Liaising with the building manager
