Electrical — Appliances

Install the appliance, and the circuit that goes with it.

Hob, oven, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher: each needs its own circuit at the consumer unit. Installing one means creating or checking that supply — not merely sliding the appliance into its cabinet.

Standard

One dedicated circuit per large appliance

Hob

32 A, 6 mm² cable, sometimes three-phase

Area

Paris 6th, 7th, 14th, 15th, 16th

What I do.

Five appliances, five different requirements.

Hob

The most demanding: up to 7 kW on single phase, which means a 32 A way in 6 mm² cable and a dedicated connection box. Many older kitchens have only 16 A — and that is where the work begins.

Oven

A dedicated 20 A circuit in 2.5 mm² cable. Oven and hob never share a line, even when sold as a single unit.

Microwave

It lives on the kitchen socket circuit, but a microwave built into a tall unit often deserves a socket of its own, reachable without dismantling the cabinet.

Washing machine

A dedicated 20 A circuit and an earthed socket are required. In a bathroom, its position must respect the safety zones — a washing machine under a basin is not always possible.

Dishwasher

A dedicated 20 A circuit as well. The classic pitfall is a socket placed behind the appliance, out of reach: I move it into the neighbouring cabinet, so it can be unplugged without pulling everything out.

Why one circuit per appliance.

It is not excessive zeal on the part of the rule-makers: two large appliances on the same line trip the breaker as soon as they start together, and above all the cable heats up. A separate way per appliance costs a few tens of euros in cable at the time of fitting, and spares redoing everything two years later.

Where I work.

Five arrondissements — the Left Bank, and the 16th just across the river — covered neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Each arrondissement has its own page, as does each neighbourhood.

Paris 6th Luxembourg · Rue de Rennes · Saint Sulpice · Mabillon · Raspail · Notre Dame des Champs · Odéon · Montparnasse · Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Paris 7th Champ-de-Mars · La Tour-Maubourg · Saint-François-Xavier · Rue du Bac · Saint-Germain · Solférino · Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin · Invalides · Ecole Militaire · Gros Caillou

Paris 14th Brune · Didot · Montsouris · Denfert Rochereau · Mouton Duvernet · Plaisance · Pernety · Montparnasse · Alésia

Paris 15th Necker · Saint Lambert · Vaugirard · Croix Nivert · Lecourbe · Convention · Commerce · Javel · Beaugrenelle · Grenelle

Paris 16th Trocadéro · Passy · Auteuil · La Muette · Victor Hugo · Porte Dauphine · Chaillot · Ranelagh · Exelmans · Porte de Saint-Cloud

Beyond these five arrondissements: elsewhere in Paris and the Île-de-France, depending on the project.
