Electrical — Heating

Replace the convectors, keep the walls.

Convector heaters from the nineteen-eighties warm the ceiling and scorch the dust. In most cases they can be replaced without major work — the supply is already there; it only needs checking.

What I do.

Four cases, and what lies behind the old heater.

From convector to storage-type radiator

Same position, same supply: removal and fitting take an hour per heater. The comfort genuinely changes — the warmth is gentle rather than dry.

The connection box

Many old convectors are wired straight into the wall, sometimes with no box at all. It is the moment to fit a compliant, accessible one, ready for the next replacement.

A towel rail that no longer heats

A burnt-out element or a failed control board: on recent models the part often costs half the price of a new rail. I give you both prices and you choose.

Adding the pilot wire

If the old heaters had none, it must be run from the consumer unit. It is what makes programming possible and genuinely lowers the bill — more than the radiator itself.

Discreet casings

What I look at when the old heater comes off.

Behind an old convector one often finds a 1.5 mm² supply for a heater that needed 2.5, or a loose terminal-block connection. The replacement is the only moment this fault is visible — and the only moment correcting it costs almost nothing.

Where I work.

Five arrondissements — the Left Bank, and the 16th just across the river — covered neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Each arrondissement has its own page, as does each neighbourhood.
