Electrical — Lighting

Replace spotlights without redoing the ceiling.

Power-hungry halogens, spotlights that have failed, light that has turned yellow or a model no longer made: in most cases the replacement goes into the existing hole. One still has to find the right diameter, and check what supplies them.

Aim

Keep the existing cut-outs

Saving

A 50 W halogen becomes 5 W in LED

What I do.

Four cases, and what lies behind each one.

From halogen to LED

Twelve halogen spotlights mean 600 watts in the ceiling; the same in LED, around sixty. The circuit breathes, the room no longer heats up, and the bill genuinely falls.

Finding the right diameter

The cut-out diameter, not that of the spotlight: it decides whether the replacement can be made without touching the ceiling. When the size is no longer catalogued, adapter rings exist.

The transformer left behind

Many faults come from the original transformer, still sitting above the ceiling and incompatible with the new lamps. It is removed, not worked around.

Spotlights that flicker or buzz

Almost always an old dimmer that cannot drive LEDs. Either the dimmer is changed, or spotlights designed for it are chosen.

When replacement is not enough.

If the holes were badly placed in the first place, new spotlights will not correct the lighting. I will tell you frankly: sometimes two well-placed additional points are better than a new set in the wrong places.

Where I work.

Five arrondissements — the Left Bank, and the 16th just across the river — covered neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Each arrondissement has its own page, as does each neighbourhood.
